Activity 1:
Take some needles, plastic buttons, hooks and very small pieces of cloth kept on a table. Now take a magnet in your hand, and moving a magnet over these substance. What do you observe? Needles and hooks are attracted only at ends of magnet. And plastic buttons and very small pieces cloth does not get attracted.
When moving a magnet over a substance these substance attracted at end of magnet is known as poles. Those materials which are attracted by a magnet is called magnetic materials and those materials which do not attracted by a magnet is called non – magnetic materials.
In magnet, there are two poles
1) North pole
2) South pole
Activity 2:
Keep two magnet which are place on a paper in a such way that north pole of one magnet brought close to north pole of second magnet. What did you observe? The poles are repel to each other. When two same pole brought together is known as like pole. Now exchange the position, north pole of first magnet bringing close with South pole. Now we can observe that these two poles are attracted. When two difference poles are brought together is known as unlike pole.
Q1 Identify the following materials.
Rubber, Steel, Chock, Coin, Nickel knife, Len
Ans: Magnetic materials – Steel, Coin and Nickel knife.
Non – magnetic materials – Rubber, Chock and Pen
Q2 What happen when likes pole are placed together?
Ans : When two like poles are placed together they repel to each other.
