West Bengal Board Of Secondary Education (WBBSE)
The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, acronymed as WBBSE, is an autonomous educational body of the West Bengal government which came into existence in the year 1951 under the West Bengal Secondary Education Act of 1950. It was under the guidance of the first chairperson of the council, Dr Apurba Kr Chandra, that the board was led with excellence. The board was established to look after the development and enrichment of the Secondary Education in West Bengal, that is, it looks after the development, promotion and regulation of the Class 10th education in West Bengal. WBBSE was initially known as the “Board of Secondary Education”, which was renamed to the current name that we know now in 1964, under the West Bengal Secondary Education Act in 1963 under the chairpersonship of Dr J.C Sengupta.
Responsibilities of WBBSE:
WBBSE has a lot of responsibility on its shoulders and the most important one is to promote, regulate and enhance the development of secondary education in West Bengal. The board has worked aggressively in the field since its establishment. The major responsibilities of the board includes the registration of the Class IXth students who would appear for the Class 10th board examination, which is known as the Madhyamik Pariksha. The board is also responsible for the whole board examination process of enrolling the students, providing the syllabus and time table for WBBSE Madhyamik Pariksha and declaring their results. Their responsibilities also include registering and providing recognition to schools who wish to affiliate with the board. The board also approves the textbooks for WBBSE Madhyamik Pariksha, for providing the students with the migration certificate and official marksheets too. A distinctive feature of WBBSE is the “Parshad Barta” which is published by the board itself. This periodical documents various experiences and views of the educators and helps the schools extract a better idea for education.
WBBSE Syllabus and Time Table
As mentioned before, WBBSE is responsible for providing the syllabus and time table for Classes 6th to 10th. The WBBSE syllabus is prepared by an independent panel appointed by the board itself. This board prepares and revises the syllabus after undergoing a good understanding of the national and international topics and makes sure, that all the essential topics, that are necessary for the growth of the secondary students, are introduced in the syllabus.
