Parrot- Vernal Hanging Parrot, Indian Lorikeet
Scientific Name– Loriculusvernalis
Size– 14cm
Habitat and Distribution –
This is the only ‘True Parrot’ species found in India. Although it is seen in Indian Subcontinent as well as Southeast Asia. The habitats include Tropical and Subtropical Grasslands, Dry Jungle, Cultivated areas, Moist lowlands, Woodlands, etc.
Appearance and Habits
Both Male and Female Vernal Hanging Parrots have Green Plumage, Red curved bills, red Rump (Rump is an area near the Tail) and pale yellow legs.
The difference between the Male and Female is that Male has distinctive Blue coloured Throat patch while Female has Green patch around the throat.
Immature or Juvenile Vernal Hanging parrot has a dull red Rump and does not have a throat patch.
They have a fast and direct flight with a Raucous call
Why is it called a ‘Vernal Hanging Parrot’?
Vernal Hanging Parrots can sleep upside down, it is seen as if they are hanging upside down with the support of a Branch. They can hang in such an upside-down way even at day times.
Diet-
Vernal Hanging Parrot consumes Fruits, Berries, Nectar, Buds, Seeds, flowers, etc. But they are mostly seen in Fig Trees.
Breeding-
Vernal Hanging Parrots Breeding season is from January to April in India. Their nest is located in the Tree holes and cavities. These holes are lined with some parts of the leaves.
Females lay 3 white coloured eggs and Incubate them for 20 days.
The chicks fledge in almost 30-33 days.
Threats-
Loss of Habitats is the reason for the threat of Vernal Hanging Parrots. Although Parrots are also caught and trapped in cages, Pet Trade.
