Parakeet – Rose-ringed Parakeet / Indian ring-necked Parakeet.

Size– 40cm
Habitat and Distribution –
Rose-ringed Parakeet is found in Indian Subcontinent and Africa. It is also introduced in Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Italy.
This Parakeet can be seen in Urban areas such as gardens, wetlands, rainforests, agricultural areas, etc. This Parakeet has survived in a wide range of climates and also in low temperatures.
Appearance –
Rose-ringed Parakeets are green in colour. But they are known for sexual Dimorphism. The male has a neck ring which is black and red. The ring can appear in different colours such as Cinnamon, Olive, white, blue, grey, yellow and Turquoise due to mutations in genes.
Females and Juveniles lack the ring. But they might have pale to dark grey neck rings.
They have the longest slender tail and the call is a high-pitched Squawk. They live in flocks, one can see parakeets fly in flocks. They spent their day foraging.
Rose-ringed Parakeets can mimic human speech and the pet individuals are receptive to learning and mimicry. They have a clear speech.
Diet–
Rose-ringed Parakeets are Herbivores. They feed on nuts, seeds, berries, fruits, grains and dates.
Breeding –
Rose-ringed Parakeets are Polygamous They mate with different individuals in different breeding seasons.
They form pairs from September to December. They select a nest site and defend the site from other birds. The female lays 1-7 eggs and incubation is for 3 weeks. Females get the required nutrients from consuming pea crops for egg production. The chicks are Altrical; which means they need constant care and protection. The Fledglings leave the nest after the monsoon.
Difference between a Parrot and a Parakeet.
Parrots are long in the family of Parrots. Parrots are large stout birds with strong beaks.
Parakeets are thin and slender.
Parrots have short- squared edged tailed and Parakeets have long thin and pointed tail.
