Facts, Information, Scientific Name of Common Raven
Let us learn the characteristics of a Bird among the family of very Common Birds you see and hear around.
Scientific name- Corvus Corax
Size- 25 inches.
Type – Aves
Habitat, Appearance and Feeding techniques.
This Bird species of Crow is found in the Temperate regions of North America, Africa, Ireland, Scotland, North England, the United Kingdom, California, etc.
The call of the Common Raven is similar to a crow but with a deep ‘Croak’.
Common Raven is black with a larger bill and shaggy feathers and with a broad triangular-shaped tail.
These are opportunistic feeders. Opportunistic feeders feed upon anything available in their Surroundings. In human settlements, they will browse Garbage, and feed on road kills. Hence their diet is dependent upon the location they dwell in. Invertebrates, Reptiles, Frogs, rodents, insects, etc. In the jungles, Common Ravens follow Wolves to feed upon the wolf kills. Wolf gets the help of Raven’s calls when Raven spots an injured animal that can be hunted by Wolf. This is a ‘Mutualism’ relationship between raven and wolf, in which both are benefitted.
Courtship, Breeding and Nesting.
Ravens impress their mates with their acrobatic flight moves, and provision of Food. Later mating pairs travel and nest together.
They nest in an area with proper food resources and establish their territory.
On a cliff, a Tree or in the corner of old buildings, a nest is a deep bowl-shaped, made of sticks and twigs. The inner side is covered with mud or other soft material like the fur of animals.
3-7 Eggs are laid by a female in late February or in April.
The Female incubates the Eggs, and the Male handles the duty of protection towards them for 18 to 21 days.
The hatchlings are fed by both Males & Females. Hatchlings fly within 35- 42 days.
They stick around their parents for 6 months.
Corvid Intelligence-
A study on a Raven bird and crow family is known as ‘Corvid Intelligence’.
Because Ravens are intelligent birds, with the capabilities of Problem-solving, and a good cognition of Physics; to understand movements and form a strategy accordingly in day-to-day survival, the research on Raven’s cognitive strength is a part of the study.
