There are around 14 species of Cranes in the world. Cranes are found in the wetlands, grasslands, and agricultural fields in many countries except Antarctica.
Cranes have a large necks, long legs and the V-shaped appearance of wings in flight.
The sharp, pointed beak of these gregarious (social) birds is used to probe (poke) into the vegetation to find animals like Insects, worms, Reptiles, Fish, and Frogs for feeding.
Otherwise, Cranes can also feed on plant matter like seeds, nuts, and fruits.
Call of Crane is like ‘Trumpet’.
Courtship, monogamy and Nesting.
In the monsoon or wet season, according to location cranes are ready to pair, at 2-3 years of their age.
One can find a Crane bird calling with trumpets and dancing around the field to find and impress a mate.
The mated pair stays together for life, except the circumstances are different if one partner is dead. Hence Cranes are peculiarly Monogamous.
This mated pair is territorial. An area of around 1 hectare to 500 hectares is claimed by one mated pair. They dance with trumpets, which also consists of wing display to claim the territory.
The nest of the Crane is a ‘Platform nest’. The shallow water bodies consist of these platform nests near the edges or upon the Grass. Platform nests are open, broad nests.
Two eggs are laid by the female and the chick gets parental care from both parents, until a year.
