All about a Dog Summary: All about a dog is a story written by Alfred George Gardiner. The story tells us about how a bus conductor is strict with his rules and regulations. The story begins on a winter evening when the speaker was travelling in a bus. It was cold and the bus stopped and two women and one man got in the bus and occupied the empty place in bus. The women had a little Pekinese dog. The conductor noticed the dog in the lap of a woman. He told the woman that dogs are not allowed on the bus and the lady has to go to the upper storey it she wants to travel with the dog. The lady rejected to the conductors offer and told the conductor that she would not go on the top of the bus in such chilly weather. The woman’s companion also supported the women. The conductor asked the bus to be stopped by pulling the bell. The conductor told the woman that if she doesn’t take the dog out the bus would not move. Other passengers in the bus supported the woman. Some passengers wanted to call the police while some wanted their fare back. Some passenger even left the bus.
A policeman came but he supported the conductor as he was following his rules. At last the woman agreed to go on the top of the bus. The conductor was happy and satisfied and sign pulled the bell and the bus started. After covering a short distance the bus developed some problem in its engine. The conductor went to help the driver. It took a long time to fix the engine. Meanwhile, the lady come down with her dog. When the engine started, the conductor came back and pulled the bell to start the bus. The conductor noticed the dog and signalled the driver to stop the bus again. The same discussion started all over again. The lady at first refused to go up again but the conductor was stern to his words. Finally the lady went upstairs and the conductor felt happy over his victory.
Slowly the bus was empty. The speaker was the last passenger. The speaker advised the conductor to change the rules according to situation. He told the conductor that rules are made for the comfort and convenience. It should be followed to help humans. Rules should be obeyed with goodwill. Finally when the speaker reached his destination, he got off the bus and both of them bid good night to each other.
