ii) In last summer vacation, we had great time in my grandmother’s village. We all gathered there after lots of planning and arrangements. My three uncles, aunts, cousins came there on time to stay together for one week. We had great home-cooked food in all three meals which were delicious. We roamed in farmlands, mango orchards, took bath in ponds which we will cherish for long time. Even I learned swimming this time which was another joyous event for me. We all cousins used to gather near grandmother in evening to listen stories. Then we slept on open terrace together at night. So, altogether it was a memorable experience for all of us and we wish to spend such days again once we get chance.
2.) It was Sunday, 20th July, 1969. We, the American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin in the eagle landing craft were slowly dropping down towards the surface of the moon. We glided over the rocks and craters until we saw a clear and level space suitable for landing. Down…down… until the feet of the eagle gently touched and settled on the moon’s surface. Through the crackling radio came my voice. Decent engines stopped. Over-ride switched off. The eagle had landed. Very smooth touched down. We were in the middle of a wide, oval plain about eight miles by three miles with some hills on the horizon. Large number of craters about five to fifty feet across…every variety of rock here, not much colour, mostly grey…it’s beautiful ……later, we climbed out and walked on the surface of the moon. We kicked up a fine, powdery, dust-like charcoal that sticked to our boots and clothes. We planted a flag, but without air to make a breeze, it hanged limply. There was no sign of water or any form of life. The sun glared out of a black cloudless sky. Far away the earth shone blue and white. During a long moon day, the temperature rose to 1180 C but fell to nearly- 1130C at night. In our clumsy space suits, we found movement difficult, but the low gravity helped us to bounce and hop about like kangaroos. We scooped up specimens of rocks and dusty moon ‘soil’ from the surface to bring back to earth. Besides sending back pictures by television, we took colour photographs and cined film. Soon it was time for us to return to our spacecraft to prepare for the long journey back to earth. And behind us in the dust, we left our footprints….. a reminder of hoe men first walked upon the moon.
