Habitat & Appearance-
We see crows around every part of the world, for example, Africa, Australia, the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, East Asia, South Asia, etc.
But these regions have different types of Crows. Each subspecies of ‘Corvus’ have a different establishment in their appearance according to the habitats, Size, Colour, and Features on their body and built.
The common build of Crows is a round head, a Sharp thick conical bill that can crush nuts or seeds and tear flesh as well.
The tail is short. Colours might differ except for Black or Greyish body colour.
There are around 34 species of crows found and distributed in the World.
We are all aware of what crows fundamentally feed on? But let us see how Crow forms ‘Mutualism’ relationships to acquire food.
Crow is an ‘Omnivore’.The Bird feeds on Nuts, seeds as well as meat by killing Insects, Earthworms, Young birds, etc.
They are opportunistic species, which means they can feed whatever they find and is edible. They even browse the garbage containers in human settlements to find food. They are natural Scavengers but also cleaners of the ecosystem.
Crows follow wolves as wolf hunt and feed on the carrion of dead animals. On the other hand, Crows help out Wolves by calling them when they spot an injured animal which is easy to hunt for Wolves. Hence Wolf shares their Kills with Crows.
Hence their relationship is called ‘Mutualism’ as they share their food with equal benefit.
Breeding and Altruism.
Crow Birds mature at the age of 3 years.
The female lays 9 eggs approximately and incubates them for 20-40 days. Crows are monogamous and tend to form one pair for life.
Altruism is the characteristic behaviour seen among Young crows. The Young crows or juvenile crows take care of Young chicks by feeding them. This care from related animals is known as ‘Altruism’.Hence Crow is an Altruistic bird.
Corvid Intelligence.
Crow is a very adaptable Bird. They have an I.Q of a Seven-year-old Human child. It is also seen in their behaviour, hunting techniques, Communication, Recognition, Social behaviour and Problem-Solving. There is a branch of study that researches ‘Crow’s Intelligence and behaviour known as ‘Corvid Intelligence’.
