Bharat Ratna award is the highest civilian honour of India which was started first in 1954. This award is given to those people who made exceptional records in public service, proved significant performance in various fields like art, science, literature and any human endeavour. The maximum number of award recipients for a single year is three. There is no discrimination of age, race, religion, caste, sex, occupation, language, background for nominating the recipients of Bharat Ratna award. Bharat Ratna award is also given posthumously and 14 eminent personalities have won this award posthumously under article 18 (1) of the Indian constitution. There is no monetary benefits related to this award. All awardees receive a certificate or sanad signed by the contemporary president of India, a medal shaped of pepal leaf with the curving of our state emblem Satyamev Jayate on it. There is some old story that the government of India decided to award Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose posthumously in 1992 but his family and friends refused it as they do not believe in his death. The first three Bharat Ratna award winners of 1954 were C Rajagopalachari, S Radhakrishnan and CV Raman all of whom were from Tamil Nadu. Dr. Sarvapalli Radhkrishnan was India’s first vice president, CV Raman was a mathematician, scientist and physicist who discovered the Raman scattering effect, C Rajagopalachari was a lawyer, social activist and statesman who worked for the nation.
