The Shed Summary
The poem ‘The Shed’ is written by Frank Flynn. The poem is about a shed that is at the bottom of the garden.
The 1st Para “There’s a shed …..one day” describes the shed situated at the bottom of the garden. The shed is old & has not been used since long time. It is covered by spider’s web hanging around the door. The locks & hinges have caught rust & have a creeking sound when is hit by the wind. The creeking sound disturbs the poet & he lies in the bed & listens to it. The poet has a inner feeling to open the door one fine day & see what’s inside.
The 2nd Para “There’s a dusty……..one day” describes the feeling of the writer as he wishes to peep inside the window of the shed. The shed has dusty old windows which are not cleaned since long. The poet has a feeling that someone is staring at him every time he passes from there. But he always have a wish to peep through the window one fine day.
The 3rd Para “My brother ………. One day” describes his brothers warning of a ghost inside the shed. His brother always scares & warns him about a ghost under the rotten floorboards of the shed, & if he enters there the ghost would jump out & chop his head. But the poet still has the wish to peep inside the shed & see what’s inside.
The 4th is the last Para “I know …. Just yet” which describes the poet’s realization of the truth. The poet realises that there is no ghost inside & his brother keeps lieng to him so that he does not go inside the shed. The brother thinks the shed to be his den & does not want his younger brother to take a notice on it. The poet knew that there is no one inside staring at him or making noise. It is just his inner fear that makes him feel scary. But he is confident to overcome his fear one fine day & go inside the shed, But that day has not yet come. He is still trying to build his confidence.
