Let’s get brief knowledge on Rational Number
Before go with details on Rational Number, lets understand some important terms of number.
Natural Number: The counting numbers from 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 …….., are called natural number.
Whole Number: All natural number including 0 are called whole number.
Integers: The negative of natural number to positive of natural number including 0. That’s mean -7, -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 …. is called Integers.
Fractional number: Fractional number is in the form of p/q in where the value of q not equal to 0.
Decimal Number: This number consists with whole number and decimal value. To separate the value of Whole number and Decimal digit we will use dot (.) sign. Examples 2.63, 0.12 etc
Rational Number: A Rational number is a number in the form of p/q, in where p and q are integers and the value of q not equal to 0.
Every natural number, integer, whole number, fractional number, decimal number is a rational number.
Operations of Rational Number:
1.) Addition of Rational Number:
a) Two rational numbers with the same denominators we can solve like this way below –

3.) Additive Inverse:
If the sum of two rational numbers such as 2/3 + -2/3 = 0, then 2/3 is called Additive Inverse of -2/3 and vice versa.
4.) Multiplication of Rational Number:
We can find the product of rational number by using the following steps.
Suppose the problem is, 2/3 x 3/8
- Step 1: Check numbers from numerator and from denominator divide by any number or not.
- Step 2: If divide then divide it.
- Step 3: Like in the above problem 2/3 x 3/8, (2 is in the numerator, and 8 is in the denominator. So both numbers can be divides by 2. And after divide it problem like 1/3 x ¾)
- Step 4: Again check if another two numbers in numerator and denominator can be divides or not. Yes , here 1/3 x ¾ (3 and 3 both are divides by 3. After divide problem will 1/1 x ¼
- Step 5: Then check anything more from numerator and denominator can be divides. If yes, same step like previous will continues and if not, multiply the numerator x numerator and denominator x denominators.
- Step 6: Here 1/1 x ¼ = ¼ is the answer.
5.) Multiplicative Inverse:
If the multiplication of two rational numbers such as 2/3 x 3/2 = 1, then 3/2 is called Multiplicative Inverse of 2/3 and vice versa.
6) Division of Rational Number:
We can find the answer of division of rational number by using the following steps.
Suppose the problem is, 2/3 ÷ 8/3
- Step 1: We know that division is an inverse operation of multiplication. So at first we have to find the multiplicative inverse of divisor.
- Step 2: So as per step one, 2/3 ÷ 8/3 will 2/3 x 3/8
- Step 3: Now we have to multiply it by the dividend as per Multiplication formula.
- Step 4: ¼ is the answer.
