1.) Let’s discuss and write
Sit in groups and discuss the following questions. Write the answers in your notebook.
a.) Petrol and diesel may soon be exhausted from planet Earth. Can you think of different ways in which vehicles will run in future? Make a list.
Ans. In the present world, petrol and diesel are used as the main fuels for different vehicles. However, these fuels are exhaustible resources. They will be exhausted from planet Earth in the near future. In such a case, there are some alternate ways in which vehicles will be able to run. They are –
1.) Electric vehicles
2.) Solar energy as fuel
3.) Using hydrogen and Ethanol as alternatives.
b.) In what ways is a driverless car different from a normal car?
Ans. The driverless cars are very different from a normal car. The differences are highlighted as follows –
1.) As the name suggests, the driverless car does not need a person to drive it.
2.) It has a computer, sensor and cameras that help it function.
3.) The driverless car follows traffic rules as it is programmed to do so.
4.) The driverless car reaches any destination easily, the user just needs to tell the car what the destination is.
5.) It acts faster than a normal car driven by a person.
6.) The driverless car does not get tired.
c.) How does the driverless car park itself after completing its journey?
Ans. The driverless car has cameras, sensors and a computer. The car uses these features to park itself after completing its journey.
d.) The traffic police has signaled you to go but you see a person in front of your driver less car busy talking on the phone. What will your car do and why?
Ans. The driverless car’s first rule is to not hit anyone or anything that is in its route. If the car senses through its camera and sensors that a person is standing in front of the car, without moving, the car will remain in its spot. The car will not move, even if the traffic police signals it to go.
e.) Which type of car would you like to drive? The car with a driver or a driverless car. Why?
Ans. I would like to drive a driverless car. This is because the driverless car will be able to run itself automatically. It will also park itself easily. The driverless car also follows traffic rules. It will not hit anything or anyone by mistake too. Also, the driverless car will function faster than a car with a driver and that too without getting tired. In the driverless car, I will be able to relax without worrying about driving safely.
2.) You have just finished reading about driverless cars. Do you like the idea that developments in science and technology will lead to driverless vehicles?
Imagine that you are Sarru and that you have got the opportunity to travel in a driverless car. Write an email to your friend, telling him/her about your exciting drive! Given below is an e-mail format to help you.
Ans.
Subject – Sharing my experience of traveling in a driverless car.
Dear Meena,
I hope this mail finds you well. I am well too. Are you spending your summer vacations nicely? I must say I am having the most adventurous time right now. You remember when our science teacher told us about driverless cars a month ago? At that time, I had thought that such an invention was not possible. When I came home that day, I had shared the new information with my grandmother. We had both marveled at the possibility of such a vehicle existing.
I am so excited to tell you that yesterday me and my whole family got to experience traveling in a driverless car for the first time. One of my father’s friends works in a huge automobile company, and they had sent us an invite for test riding one of their first driverless cars. I was very happy to experience such a thing.
When we went to the location, a white car rolled onto the road in front of us. The doors automatically opened and a robotic voice welcomed us. Then, once we had settled down in the seats, the doors closed on their own. There was a screen on the dashboard. It had a space to fill in the destination. The aunty, who is my father’s friend, was also with us in the car. She set the destination for the company, which was a little far away. The car confirmed the location. After that the car started its course. The car stopped at traffic signals, just like how our teacher told us. It also stopped whenever someone came in front of it. Once we reached the company, it went to the parking spot and parked itself smoothly beside many other cars. I was very astonished after I got out of the car. This was because the ride was so smooth, as if I was floating on water. I realized that even my parents, who drove cars very well, could not match the skills of the car.
I must say that the experience was very enjoyable. Such developments in science are really very interesting. I want to see more such driverless cars being used by people.
With love.
Yours truly
Sarru.
