The Happy Prince Summary
The happy Prince is a story by Oscar Wilde. The story is about a statue of a happy prince. The happy prince story is presented in the form of drama. It begins when the curtain goes up and one can see a great statue covered with gold and many fine jewels. The big statue was created on a pedestal. The happy prince statue could see the entire city and he even saw the miseries of the people, which made the Happy prince sad. On the stage was the statue and few student are seen discussing about the statue. The students introduces the audience with the statue. The students describes about the statue and says that famous statue of Happy prince. The prince was always happy felt sad. This is the reason everyone called him Happy prince and when he died the town built this stable in his memory.
Now the statue can see the entire city and now the prince actually comes to know the misery and hardship faced by people. He becomes sad after seeing poverty, starvation and struggle faced by people of the city. The story reveals around how the people of city happy. One day a swallow bird was migrating to warmer place to escape the coming winter. On the way it took shelter for the right when the statue was crying, tear dropped on the swallow. The bird was Surprised to see the statue weep.
The bird asked the Happy prince to why it was crying. The prince told how the city was so unhappy the people are suffering and seeing this things make the statue cry. The prince asked swallow to help him move as the statue is fixed. At first the bird refused saying that all his friends have left and the bird needs to leave soon. But statue insisted and then the bird agreed.
First thing that statue told was to remove the ruby from his sword hilt and give it to a poor lady in the little street whose son was suffering from fever. The swallow removed the ruby and put the ruby near then returned to Happy Prince. The bird told the prince that it will return to night. The statue begged the bird for one more help and told the bird to stay for one more night. Next thing that the prince wanted the bird to do was to help a young play righter freezing in cold, Who wants to finish his play but has become too cold. The prince told the bird to pluck on of his sapphire eye and give it to the play writer. The bird did what was told to it swallow returns to stay good bye to the prince but the prince insisted him for one more help . He told the bird to deliver his other sapphire eye to a little match girl who has dropped her matches. The bird did what was told to him. When swallow returns he says to the prince that he will remain by his said as the prime is blind now. The swallow reported prince, That the beggars are starving the poor are becoming poorer . After hearing this , the prince told the bird to take all the gold from his body and to give it to the poor people. The swallow agreed and delivered the gold to the poor. The bird while delivering delivering this grew weaker and because of the cold, the bird died. The prince also grew dull and grey. As the bird died, a strange sound came from the statue , a breaking sound. The mayor saw the dull statue and ordered it to be removed and melted. When the statue was melted the heart made of lead did not melt and was thrown in garbage. It landed near the swallow`s body. God angel`s took both the dead swallow and broken heart to God as they were most precious on land.
