The House sparrow is a widespread bird, found in the Middle East, Eurasia, North Africa, India, America, etc.
Habitat
Sparrow is spotted in Urban areas or cultivation areas. The Tropical regions of the planet.
Description
Male House Sparrow has a brown upper body and white belly region.
The beak, eyes and neck area are black.
The beak is grey. The brown plumage has a streak of black streaks
The Female House sparrow is light brown and grey. She has a buff supercilium around her eyes. The beak is grey.
Sparrow has a Chirp call.
House sparrows are seen bathing in water, also dust bathing in sand. This is to get rid of parasites on their plumage.
They roost by squeezing their head into the shoulder feathers. They are seen roosting together.
Diet-
House sparrows depend on Seeds and grains to eat. But they can feed on anything available where they dwell in.
They feed on the cultivation of corn, maize, wheat, etc.
Fruits like berries, insects like butterflies, ants, bugs, earthworms and many invertebrates are the food options for the sparrow.
Breeding, Nesting and Courtship-
Most sparrows are monogamous.
Sparrows can mate even in their Juvenile phases.
Male starts building a nest and give calls to attract females. The Courtship displays performed by males are head movements, tail raising, shivering, etc
Sparrows are cavity Nesters. Tree hollows, Crevices, cliffs, sand banks, etc
Female feeds on insects and invertebrates for strength to lay eggs.
The egg clutch is of 4-5 eggs. The male assists in covering the eggs in the nest.
Incubation lasts for 11-14 days.
Chicks fledge after 11-23 days and are altricial, which means they require constant care and feeding at least for 4 days. They have their eyes shut for 4 days.
