Ramsar Sites in India
Ramsar sites are referred to the selected wetland regions of international geographical importance included in Ramsar convention on wetlands of UNESCO in 1971. The initiative was started in Ramsar city of Iran for which its name was kept according to the place. The motto of Ramsar convention is environment conservation with domestic, national and international protection for sustainable development in the long run. The Ramsar convention came into force for India on 1 February, 1982. It basically targets the wetlands of international importance where major ecological changes had been found, is present now and possibility of finding in near future. The ecological changes can be occurred as the consequences of various factors like urbanisation, deforestation, industrial development, environment pollution, technological advancement and new infrastructure. The sensitive wetlands which are most effected due to various factors included in the clause of Montreux record. Ramsar sites is an important part of geography on which candidates should focus for carrying better marks. In this article, they will get to know much details about Ramsar sites of India.
Wetlands have been affected for several years due to excessive pollution and deforestation rates. Wetlands have become part of the threatened ecosystem in India. In order to protect the most affected wetlands Ramsar convention has come into force. Ramsar convention included all affected and imbalanced wetlands of India for conserving its natural flora and fauna. With Ramsar convention people will be aware about the importance of protecting wetlands for maintain proper ecological balance in our environment. At present, there are total 75 wetland conservation in the Ramsar sites list. Total 11 new wetlands have been included in the list this year. Till now Tamil Nadu state has the maximum number of Ramsar sites which is 14. The first Ramsar site of India is Chilika Lake in Orissa.
