Habitat and Distribution –
Quails reside in the woodlands, Croplands, Bushes, Grasslands and Farmlands of the countries like North America, Europe, Australia Asia, Africa, etc.
Appearance and Habits –
This is an oval-shaped bird which appears in a variety of colours according to the species. They are Black, blue, brown, cream black, white, etc.
The belly parts appear in light colours, Quails have strong legs and short and curved beaks.
They walk on the ground by pecking on leaves, roots grasses, worms, insects, seeds and berries for feeding.
Quails are active at Day and also at night.
They Dust bathe in the sand to get rid of parasites.
Call of a Quail is a high-pitched Grunt or cackles with beats & harmony.
When noticed a predator, these birds run and hide.
They can fly for short distances, hide and also stand motionless to get unnoticed
Quails are solitary birds, but when a flock of Quails is seen, it has a particular name called Bevy or Covey. Quails dwell in flocks in the winter season.
Nesting –
Quail reach sexual maturity in 2 months.
They nest on Cereal, Wheatlands, cornfields, also on dry grasslands.
The number of eggs in a clutch is 1-2 or 6.
Eggs hatch within a month and the chicks are Precocial, which means they can walk and feed by themselves, to follow around their parents.
Lifespan and Threat
Quail eggs are in danger due to their size, they are generally spotted by Predators like snakes, raccoons, foxes, squirrels, weasels, etc.
The Quail birds survive for 3-5 years.
