Distribution and Habitat
This bird is found in the areas of Tropical India and Southeast Asia that include lakes or wetlands consisting of submerged or floating water vegetation.
The appearance of Pheasant-Tailed Jacana.
Pheasant-tailed Jacana has a white head, a dark brown belly and a long tail.
The wings are white with a dark brown tip.
The nape region or the back of the head has a yellow patch.
The non-breeding Pheasant Tailed Jacana lack a long tail.
Legs are long, as well as the toes are long to walk on the water-floating vegetation.
Diet
Pheasant Tailed Jacana feeds on the water vegetation, algae, seeds and plant material. They also forage insects on the floating vegetation.
Breeding –
June to September is the mating season of this Jacana Bird.
Females are Polyandrous, which means they maintained a harem and mate with many males, just to lay 10 eggs in a clutch. The motive of the female Pheasant Tailed Jacana is to lay a clutch of at least 10 eggs.
The Nest is on the vegetation made up of leaves, shoots or stalks surrounded by a depression in the centre.
Now comes the response of Male parents. He incubates the eggs for 26-28 days.
Males pretend to show their wings are broken so no Predators are attracted.
Sometimes, females defend nests. She looks after the nests by blocking all the other waterbirds that try to come near the nests, mostly by chasing them.
The chicks are ‘Nidifugous’ chicks. They leave the nests immediately after birth.
