i) Why could the youngman not afford to buy even a plate of potato chips and a cup of coffee?
The young man could not afford to buy even a plate of potato chips and a cup of coffee because he was unemployed and had just five rupees in his pocket.
ii) Why did the young man refuse to get his shoes polished?
The young man was unemployed and had only five rupees left so he could not afford potato chips and a cup of coffee even though he was hungry. So shoe polish was an unnecessary waste of money for him.
iii) ‘Instantly the thought seized me’. To what thought does the speaker refer to?
That he could choose shoeshine as his profession also as per his calculation the shoeshine could earn more than a Government office clerk.
iv) What does the expression ‘he read it’ in this context mean?
‘he read it’ in this context means what the author meant Shovan lal should understand.
v) Had you been in such a situation -‘no job,’ ‘no money in the pocket’ ! What would have been your reaction?
Yes I have been through situations with those situations making it difficult to get through each day but difficult situations also teach us a lot. So I will try my best to calm down and find work as soon as possible.
