NCERT Class 6 English Grammar Preposition: A preposition is a term that comes before a noun or pronoun to show how it relates with some other word in the sentence.
Prepositions are an element of speech.
Example – We stay at home during the summer vacation.
Sahil sat on the chair.
The noun or pronoun is usually referred to as the preposition’s object.
A gerund can also be the object of the prepositions that are mostly placed before their object.
Classification of Prepositions.
- Preposition of time
- Preposition of agent
- Preposition for place,position, direction
- Preposition for Preposition for instrument
1.) Prepositions of time –
Prepositions are used to specify the time or provide an estimate of when something has happened or will happen..
The fact that so many prepositions can be used to denote the time which sometimes makes it a little confusing.
Preposition words that are used to indicate the time – in, on, at, before, after, during etc
Case 1- At, In, On (Prepositions of time )
At – is used to show a definite point of time.
- The train arrived at 3 p.m.
- The Meeting will be at 1 pm.
In – shows period of time.
In February, In Summer, In the morning, In the evening, In 2022
1.) We eat pasta in the evening before dinner.
2.) Students get a long vacation in summer.
3.) Radha was born in 1992.
On– before the name of days or dates.
1.) My pet was born on 18th April 2022.
2.) I shall visit on tuesday.
Case 2 – In, Within (Prepositions of time )
IN – indicates the end of a period of time in future.
I shall be visiting in a week.
Within – indicates before the end of a period of time in future.
I shall be visiting within a week.
Case 3- Till (upto), By (not later than) (Prepositions of time )
I shall complete this task till saturday
I shall complete this task by saturday
Case 4 – Before (earlier than) , After (later than)(Prepositions of time )
1.) Shina was born after the war was over.
2.) Sahil came before 3 o’clock.
Case 5 – During (Indicate that something is happening for a period of time)
We shall go to Canada during the summer vacation.
Case 6 – Since, For, From
Since – can be used for a point of time with perfect and perfect continuous tenses.
She has been practicing guitar since her childhood.
For – can be used to indicate a period of time in the past , present or future.
He came here for five days.
From – can be used to indicate some point of time in all 3 tenses.
Present tense – Sahil works from morning till evening.
Past tense- She studied from 1 pm to 5 pm.
Future tense – I will exercise regularly from tomorrow.
2.) Prepositions of agent –
Prepositions are used to establish the relationship between the object and what it is doing, or to connect a noun or pronoun with its activity.
Prepositional phrases like “by,” “with,” and “in” are used to describe the connection between nouns and their functions.
Example-
The book is written by Mr A P J Abdul kalam.
I am going to Ratnagiri tomorrow with my family.
The homework is given by his class teacher.
3.) Prepositions of place, Position, Direction and motion
Prepositions are used to specify an object’s position or to determine the location of the object with respect to the place.
Some Preposition words that are used to show the place are – on, over, under, inside, outside, in, at, above, below.
1.) For the name of the city, state, country, continents
My sister lives in pune in maharashtra in India in asia.
2.) When referring to a specific place, house, street.
Seema lives in a hut.
He lives in a city.
3.) At- Is used to indicate villages and small towns.
I live in Pune.
4.) At- Is used for a particular location.
He is waiting at Bus stop.
She works at an airport.
5.) On shows contact
The book is kept on the table.
6.) Over is opposite of under and above is opposite of below
Inside is the opposite of Outside.

b)The bottle was kept under the drawer.
c)The uniform comes above her knees.
d)The newspaper is kept below the magazine
e)Seema locked herself inside the room.
f)Childrens are playing outside the villa.
4) Preposition for instruments –
Prepositions are used to define technologies as well as to talk about the equipment or tools, or they are used to introduce the tools or instruments.
Some Preposition words that are used to introduce the instruments or devices are by, with, with the help of, on etc
1.) Radha is making a hole in the wall with a drilling machine.
2.) I have finished my work on the laptop.
3.) He is more comfortable writing with his pen.
4.) The lion was killed by a hunter with his gun.
5.) I achieved success with her help.
