a) What do you mean by the term ‘Industry’ ?
= Industry can be referred to as an economic activity concerned with the production of goods and services, or extraction of resources.
b) Where is Silicon Valley located ?
= Silicon Valley is located in California, Western part of the USA.
c) Name the three major industries of the world.
= The three major industries of the world are: Iron and steel industry, textile industry and IT or Information and Technology industry.
Q2. Answer the following questions in about 40 words:-
a) What are the four categories of industries based on raw materials?
= Based on the raw- materials used, the four major industries are:-
i) Agro based industries – These use raw materials from agricultural and animal based products. Such as dairy industry, cotton textiles etc.
ii) Marine based industries – As the name suggests, raw materials used are obtained from water bodies and marine animals. Ex- fish canning.
iii) Forest based industries –Forest products used as raw materials. Plywood, furniture are some examples.
iv) Mineral based industries –These include iron, cement, chemical industries.
b) What is an industrial region?
= Industrial areas are developed with the establishment of industries, different infrastructural facilities and services. When a number of industries are located or clustered in the same region, it is deemed is as an industrial region. In India, these industrial regions comprise of Mumbai- Pune region, Hooghly region etc. In the world, the major industrial regions are: Eastern Northern America, Western and Central Europe, Eastern Europe and Eastern Asia.
c) Name two important centres each of iron and steel industry and cotton textile industry in the world.
= The most prominent Iron and steel industries of the world are:-
i) Tata Iron and Steel Company in Jamshedpur – Established by Jamshedji Tata at a small village of Sakchi, Jharkhand. This site has emerged to be a major iron and steel centre. It has high quality mineral deposits.
ii) Iron and Steel Industry in Detroit, USA – It is located in south eastern part of Michigan, USA. It is also known for its automobile industry.
The major cotton textile industries of the world are:
i) Ahmedabad –Located on the banks of Sabarmati river in Gujrat, it is known for its excellent quality of cotton and known as the ‘Manchester of India’.
ii) Osaka(Japan)- It is located in Honshu region, the biggest island. It is known for its favourable condition for growing good quality of cotton. Also called ‘Manchester of Japan’.
d) What is information technology?
= Information Technology, also known as IT industry, is the development and management of computer based information systems, more specifically it is about development of software and hardware. The IT industry deals with data storage, processing and distribution of information. The USA was first to bring up this kind of industry and then the rest followed. In India, Bangalore is the biggest IT hub and other major cities like Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad are also excelling in the IT industry.
