Ans. The science of map-making is called Cartography.
b) Name the cardinal points of a map.
Ans. The cardinal points of a map are the directions like north, south, east and west.
c) What is an atlas?
Ans. The collection of many maps is called atlas.

a) What are the methods to express a scale?
Ans. A scale can be expressed by statement like 1 cm to 2 km, by a fraction like 1:200000 or by drawing a graphical orlinear scale on the map.
b) What is the use of conventional symbols?
Ans. The conventional symbols are used in maps to show some features like trees, roads, buildings etc. The use of these symbols also save space and more information can be given in a map.
c) What are the essential components of a map?
Ans. There are three essential components of a map which are distance, direction and symbol.
d) What is the difference between a map and a plan?
Ans. A map shows only important features of an area like mountains, oceans, rainfall, population, etc. whereas a plan shows a small area in great details like the length and breadth of various rooms, doors, etc.
