Facts, Information, Scientific Name of Long-tailed Tit
Let us learn about the bird which is short and stout but has a long tail and ‘Trill’call.
Common name- Long-tailed tit.
Scientific name- Aegithalos caudatus
Size- 7cm – 9cm.
Distribution and Habitat
Long-tailed Tit is found in Deciduous forests, Woodlands, Shrublands, riverine areas, and farmland of countries in North European regions or Temperate regions. It is also found in Southern and Mediterranean regions.
Description of Long-Tailed Tit.
This bird has a round-shaped body with a long tail and short bill.
The tail is Black and white. Otherwise, plumage is white with black and pinkish marks on the wings.
The “Tripple trill” is the sound of the Long-Tailed Tit.
Diet and Roosting.
Long-tailed tit bird appears in groups of 6-7 individuals which includes Chicks, Juveniles and Parents.
These flocks are territorial they roost together in winter for protection against cold.
Long- Tailed tits feed upon Insects, Arthropods, Moth or Butterfly Larvae, and Seeds.
Breeding and Nesting-
In the breeding season, from July to February, Long-tailed Tits don’t dwell in Flocks.
Long-tailed Tits are monogamous. Building a nest is an important part of Breeding. It has to be somewhere less susceptible to predators.
Nest is made up of Lichen that camouflage (hides in the background) nest, moss and a spider nest that can be provided as a loop as support. Nests also consist of Feathers, Cocoons.
Nest is located on the branch of a Tree or in dense bushes.
The incubation period is of 14 days, later chicks fledge after 18 days.
