C1 Answer the following questions and share your responses with your partner.
1.) Why was the morning walk pleasant to Mr. A.L. Hendricks?
Answer: The morning walk is pleasant to Mr. A.L. Hendricks because he could see on either side red and green-roofed bungalows, green lawns and gardens.
2.) “The exercise is good for me,” says the narrator. What was that exercise?
Answer: The exercise was to walk a half-mile from the author’s home to the rail track lines in the morning and from the lines to his home in the evening.
3.) What did the narrator notice one morning?
Answer: One morning, the narrator noticed two boys playing in the garden of the more modest cottages.
4.) How did the smaller boy behave while playing with the bigger boy?
Answer: The smaller boy behaved like the master of the bigger boy whole playing.

1.) What sight surprised the narrator the next day?
Answer: The next day, the narrator observed that the black boy was ordering the white boy to do his work. The black boy was the master the next day.
2.) What were the two commands given by the black boy to the white boy?
Answer: The two commands given by the black boy to the white boy were- ‘Get me a banana’ And ‘peel it for me.’
3.) Why was the white man surprised at the narrator’s outburst?
Answer: The white man was surprised at the narrator’s outburst because he thought that the narrator had misinterpreted the whole game and the behavior of the children.
4.) Why do you think the narrator smiled at the end?
Answer: The narrator smiled at the end because he saw the white man’s wife who was a fair brown woman. And the children were just like their parents.

C5) Read and discuss your responses with your partner. Then write.
1.) What similarities and differences can you make out between the two boys?
Answer: Both of the boys were small around four and five years old. Both were dressed in blue shirts and khaki pants. They wore no shoes and their feet were muddy, these are the similarities of both of the boys. The differences between the boys were that the bigger of the two was a sturdy youngster, very dark with a mat of coarse hair on his head and coal-black eyes. He was definitely a little Jamaican. The other little boy, who was smaller, was also sturdy. He was white, with hazel eyes and light brown hair.
2.) What three commands did the big boy give the small boy?
Answer: The big boy commanded the small boy to bring a banana for him and peel it.
3.) The author could find no answer to some questions. Which are those questions? [See paragraph 5]
Answer: The author was troubled with the questions. He had the following questions –
Whether the boy realized that he was slave in his own country?
Whether he could relate with the white boy?
Whether the small boy would rule the black boy?
4.) Why was the narrator surprised the next morning?
Answer: On the previous day, the author had observed that the white boy was commanding the black boy. The black was the slave of the white boy. But the next morning, the author was surprised to see that the black boy commanding the white and the white boy obediently following his commands the way the black boy did the previous day.
5.) How did the two boys behave while playing?
Answer: The two boys behaved like the master and the slave while playing. On the previous day, it was the white boy who played the role of the master and commanded the black boy. On the other day, it was the black who played the role of the master and it was the white boy’s turn to be the slave. There was the exchange of the roles and both of them played the role well.
6.) What made the narrator think that the black boy could be the son of a servant or a class mate of the white boy?
Answer: Initially the narrator thought that the black boy was the white boy’s servant’s son because he obeyed everything that was told by the white boy. But when the author noticed that they were wearing the same dress then he thought that the two of them might be the classmates.
7.) What were the two points that the narrator wanted to clarify to the white man?
Answer: The first point that the narrator wanted to clarify to the white man was that one day or the other, the blacks will rule over the whites. And the second point that the narrator wanted to clarify to the white man was that it was just a game.
8.) The two boys, though brothers, differed in their colour. What might be the reason?
Answer: The two boys differed in their colors because their parents were of different races. Their mother was a brown woman and father was a white man.
9.) If you were the white man, how would you react to the narrator’s comment?
Answer: If were the white man, I would have reacted in the same manner as the narrator did.
