Hunting Snake Summary: ‘Hunting Snake’ is a poem written by Judith Wright. The poem is about poet’s experience of watching a snake and describing his experience.
In the first Stanza, the poet talks about autumn season, which is not too hot not too cold. It is a perfect weather to walk under the sky. The atmosphere is described to be silent and peaceful. But while walking in such soothing environment, suddenly the poet freeze because he saw a frightening snake reeling by the poet was very afraid at the sight of great black snake.
In the second stanza, the poet describes the great black snake. The snake moves through the parting grass. The snake searched for its prey in the grasses. The poet describes snake a heroic who is on an adventure. The poet also uses word like diamond to describe the beauty of the snake. He expresses how the snake grows like diamond under the sun. This image of the snake makes the poet hold her breath to see the snake pass.
In the third stanza, the poet thinks about the prey which is a small food that was being searched by the snake. Here the snake is described as a predator. The poet cannot lake her eyes off the snake and cannot move until the snake leaves.
In the last stanza the poet describes the disappering of the snake. The snake is describes to be cold, dark and splendid. ‘cold’ as it is cold blooded, dark because of its colour and splendid on how its scale shines like diamond. The snake moves into the grass and is gone her away from the sight of the poet and her friend. Both take a deep breath of relief and look at each other.
