Facts, Information, Scientific Name of Goonch Fish
A fierce Catfish which prevents the overgrowth of the sea animal population, but also terrorizes the Humans not to hunt them
Name- Goonch Fish
Scientific name- Bagarius yarrelli.
Size- 2m to 6 feet.
Distribution & Habitat
The Goonch catfish is found in the Riverbeds of the Brahmaputra river in India. Otherwise, Goonch catfish is also spotted in the countries of South Asia, South India, the Western ghats of India and Indonesia.
Appearance –
Males and females have the same appearance.
Goonch Catfish is a Pale grey, Yellow brown with a black patch.
It has a flattened body with a triangular head tiny eyes, and thin lips. The lips consist of 3 barbels ( barb which means beard) on the nose
There are sensory Pores on the head. The body is scaleless and slimy.
Goonch Catfish have sharp teeth on their jaw. A caudal/ Tail fin is present.
Goonch catfish are known to attack humans.
They are fast swimmers.
Food-
Goonch catfish feeds on Benthic organisms
Benthic organisms are living organisms that dwell at the bottom of the water body.
Benthic organisms consist of fish, Crustaceans, invertebrates, etc.
Goonch catfish is also reported to feed on Human corpses.
Breeding-
The breeding season of Goonch Catfish is before Monsoon.
The reproduction is a Spawning reproduction.
Females released eggs and deposit them in the water and male Goonch fish will fertilise the eggs. This is called ‘Spawning’ reproduction.
