Size- 45cm-53cm
Distribution and Habitat-
Fulvous Whistling ducks are found in wetlands, lakes with vegetation and Rice fields of Tropical Regions in countries of South America, Mexico, the West Indies, the United States, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent.
How can one identify Fulvous Whistling Duck?
Fulvous Whistling-Ducks have grey bills and legs.
The body is of Dark brown and Buff coloured plumage with Black and white coloured feathers on the wings
These ducks have black tails.
Juveniles Fulvous Whistling Ducks are light in colour with Dark Brown Stripes from head to neck.
Fulvous Whistling ducks are noisy birds with the calls like a high whistles.
They are found in small groups. They dive only when it’s necessary as they feed on vegetation like Water snowflakes, Water lilies, Seeds, Grass, and Stems.
Breeding –
The breeding season of Fulvous whistling is June to October in India. The Birds are monogamous Mating rituals include Head dipping and a short dance after mating in which they raise their bodies sideways, one-to-one.
Insects, worms, and molluscs that dwell on or near aquatic vegetation are consumed by females before egg-laying to build up strength.
Nest is built on the ground, vegetation, rice fields Tree holes with plant leaves and stem.
10 Eggs are laid and incubated for 24-29 days.
Chicks are Precocial which means they can walk and feed on their own. The chicks leave nests after one day. But they are under the protection of their parents until they leave.
