Distribution
Falcon bird is found in every region except Antarctica. This fast-flying Bird can be seen in Forests, Desserts, Grasslands, City outskirts or even in the city.
Appearance
Falcon is the fastest Flying bird as it has Pointed ‘V-shaped wings that help it in aerial dynamics which increases its speed.
The beak is ‘Hooked’ for catching and piercing the prey to eat. Claws are sharp,with good grip.
Falcon is a Kite like Bird with a broad round head. It has horizontally barred or Large spotted plumage on the feathers.Thecolours differ according to the species.
Falcons are solitaire birds they roam on their own. They are seen Hunting in Day time. And can be spotted Basking, ‘ absorbing the sun rays’ at sunrise or sunset.
Falcons are Territorial. They defend the Resting place and own it.
Food-
Falcons are Carnivores. They eat meat. They hunt Ducks, Snakes,Lizards, Frogs,Rabbits,etc.
Nesting –
Falcons are Monogamous. It means they pair with one partner for life. Their nest is located on a Cliff, Building corners, Bridges, etc. Their nest is made up of Tree sticks. The nest is called the ‘Eyrie’ nest. It is a platform made up of sticks and nest materials where a bird lands its flight without any interruptions.
The female is responsible for the incubation of 4 Eggs for 32 days. Males provide food.
Eggs hatch after a month. As the Falcon Bird is known for its flight. The chicks take their time to adapt to the fast flight according to their pace.
Ecological Importance and Threats.
Falcon is a ‘Prey Bird’. It plays a crucial role in the Food chain by consuming meat. Its lifespan is 13 years. Otherwise, large owls can hunt falcons. Habitat loss is the major threat to Falcon bird existence. Shooting and Poisoning from pesticides are a major threat. Falcon that feed on agricultural land can eventually consume the pesticides and land on the other animals that the Bird feeds on. Peregrine Falcon was a victim of this environmental issue.
