Facts, Information, Scientific Name of Common Green Magpie
A bird that changes the colour of plumage like a new wear, and is aggressively fierce.
Name – Common Green Magpie.
Scientific name – Cissa chinensis
Size – The size is approximately 50cm.
Discovery & plumage peculiarity.
In 1775, Gorge Louis Leclerc and Cumtede Buffon described this crow-like species of bird which has unique characteristics.
In the areas of temperate region forests, shrubland, wetlands, and rivers a Green colour Bird with peculiar red eye rings, a beak and a black stripe on top of the beak to the back of the head, is spotted.
This bird flies with reddish maroon wings in the countries of India, China, Bhutan and Thailand.
Although Green magpie changes their colour due to high sunlight and less present carotenoids (pigment) in their Diet. Yellow, orange, and red pigments can occur on their plumage. This bird turns blue when it dies.
Feeding and Dive-Bombing.
Common Green Magpie is an Omnivore. It feeds on small bushes but also invertebrates, reptiles mammals and young birds or bird eggs.
They are also witnessed feeding on a carcass.
These birds are noisy and social but can have aggressive defence actions when intruded upon. They dive, by flying in roles and attack the predators with its beak. This is known as ‘ Dive- bombing’.
Breeding and Nesting
They entangled the twigs and dry leaves to make a nest.
The Female lays 4-6 eggs and incubates for 18-19 days.
Both males and females feed the chicks.
Chick leaves the nests when 25 days old.
Common Green magpies can use the same nests for years with a few repairs.
Threats to Common green magpie-
The natural predators of the Common Green Magpie are Foxes. The population of Common Green magpie is declining due to Habitat loss and Hunting.
