Distribution
Himalayas, South Iran, Japan, Eastern Asia.
Habitat
Deciduous Forest, Scrubland, and Thornbush Forest, in summer, reside in the Himalayas.
Appearance
Black-coloured body with a V-shaped white patch on the chest. Light brown Muzzle which is the area around the nose and mouth. Black Tail. Ears are bell-shaped and stand upright.
Food
Asiatic Black Bear is an omnivore animal. It means he feeds on animals as well as plants. Asiatic Black Bear feeds on Insects, Larvae, Termites, Herbs, Honey, and Cherries. Langurs, Water Buffaloes, Wild Boar. This Bear is an opportunistic animal, which means he can feed on Garbage or waste food and continue to survive.
Asiatic Black Bear eats lots and lots of food and the excess food is converted into Fat that satisfies their energy while in Hibernation.
Breeding & Nesting
Asiatic Black Bear breeds from the middle of June to the middle of August.
After around 200-240 days a Sow (adult female) gives birth to a litter of 1-4 cubs in the Tree hollows or Den.
Bear cubs open their eyes after 3 days and can walk around after 4 days. They need care and assistance till 104-130 weeks. Then after 24-36 months, they turn Independent.
Asiatic Brown Bear spends more time within a Family, mostly as Arboreal being. They climb on Trees by moving in order from biggest to smallest in size. They built a temporary nest of 15 feet for residing on a Treetops with the help of branches and cover it with Tree leaves.
Hibernation
The hibernation phase of the Asiatic Black Bear is between November to March. They prepare a Den for Hibernation in the Middle of October. Dens are made up of Hollow space Trees, Holes in the Ground, Hollow Logs, or the vacant Dens of Brown bears.
Asiatic Black Bear lives for 25 years but there is a threat to their existence because of Habitat Destruction and Hunting.
