Breeding and Nesting Habits
The life cycle of an Ant is a process called Metamorphosis. Metamorphosis is the stage where Ant’s appearance is different at every stage. If an Ant lays an Egg, it is the first to appear and the second appearance is called ‘Larva’ a worm-like organism that comes out of an Egg. The third appearance is the ‘Pupa’ in which Larva cuddles up and stays stationary for a while and from which exit a Crawling guest – an Ant.
Ant Larva is developed into 5 more stages before becoming a Pupa.
The overall Ant Birth takes place in 60 days.
Ants are Eusocial insects. It means they lived in a closed Family in which A ‘Queen ant ‘ and Male ants are responsible for giving birth to young Ants. And some other Female ants have a duty to Hunt, built nests, and take care of all young ants called as new ‘Brood’.
Together this family of Ants performs various activities like Hunting for Food. They lead a Trail of the Group to Hunt and obtain Food. In this process, if anyone ant meets with an emergency it helps other ants by sending warning signals with help of releasing ‘Pheromones’ through which other ants are alerted. Most species of Ants release ‘Pheromone’ called ‘Formic Acid’.With this defence technique and Food goal, Ants can travel upto 200 meters from their Nest.
Ants are also Ensemble Architects that builds nest together. ‘Army ants’ build nests by holding their bodies together for awhile. ‘Weaver ants’ built nests by attaching Leaves.
Ecological Importance –
Ants help the ecosystem by forming Aeration in the soil through walking and living in the soil. It also protects the Pest population by feeding on other pests. This is called ‘Biological control’ in which nature itself heals its overgrowth.
