ESSAY TYPE QUESTION AND ANSWERS
1.) What did you learn about the postmaster from the story, “A Letter To God”? Do you think he contributed to some superstitions?
Ans: The postmaster is a great man with amazing qualities, that any man today would lack. After close reading of the chapter, we learn that the postmaster is a man with a golden heart. He did laugh at Lencho’s letter, but did not make fun of his faith, which proves he has a kindheart. He felt bad after learning about Lencho’s destroyed corn, and did want his faith in God to shatter, and decided to help him by donating a part of his salary. Not only did he donate, but he also urged the other employees of the post office to donate as much as they could, to help Lencho, which makes him a great community helper. His act of social service for a person, whom he did even know properly, proves that he was an empathetic and a helpful person. These qualities prove that if people in the society are like the postman, many problems of the poor people can actually be solved easily. He not only donated his salary, but urged other community fellows to do the same.
2.) Do you think the chapter revolves around only Lencho’s faith in God? What are your opinions on Lencho’s faith?
Ans: The chapter revolves around Lencho’s faith and the postmaster’s act of kindness. These are the two things that bring a reader’s interest to the story. Lencho’s faith in God is good, but doing practically nothing about the problem and relying completely on God for help is not something a practical man would do. It was the postmaster’s generosity that helped Lencho. Had there be some other person, he would have laughed off at Lencho’s letter and would have put it aside. We can also take it as Lencho’s faith in God that the letter was destined to go in the hands of a kind hearted postmaster who decided to help Lencho. A change of opinion can make Lencho’s unquestionable faith in God, which made him think that the post office employees had stolen a part of the help provided by God.
