5.) What does the phrase ‘your changing face’ suggest?
Ans. The phrase ‘your changing face’ suggests the poet’s true and deep love towards her. He admires goodness. Though her face is changing, the love he has for her is deep and beyond physical looks.
6.) ‘Love fled’ connotes the death of the man who loved her.
Comprehension II
1.) How is the ‘one man’ different from the many others who loved the lady?
Ans. Here the ‘one man’ refers to the poet who is the true lover of the lady. Everyone else loved the lady for her charm and external beauty, but he loved her deeply and truly. His love is beyond physical attraction. He loved her soul.
2.) Does the poem bring out transient nature of beauty as against permanence of love?
Ans. In this poem, the poet loves his beloved deeply. He loves her soul not her body. Though the lady has become old now, he still loves her same. With the changing time, his love is only getting deeper and deeper. Just because she has turned old, he doesn’t stop loving her. He loves her soul and not body, so for him, her soul matters a lot.
Comprehension III
1.) Comment on the usage of time frame by the poet.
Ans. The time frame used in this poem shifts from present to past to the future. He imagine himself as a dead man in the future and asks her lady to read the books of poems that he had written for her. He makes her realize that it was only he who loved her soul, everyone else loved her external charm and beauty. But now the time has gone and he has left this world.
2.) ‘When you are old’ is a poem of contrasts. What purpose do they serve?
Ans. The major contrast in the poem is about external and internal love. In her young days, the lady found happiness in the people who admired her external beauty, but now as she has grown old, she realized that only her true lover, i.e the poet has loved her soul. Only the true love stays forever and is always beyond physical aspects of life. Another contrast is of young and old days, in our young days, we enjoy the beauty and freshness but in the old days, we feel tired and also people don’t give attention as they give in our young days. Also the lady doesn’t realize the value of true love until her lover leaves this world. We realize a person’s worth only when he/she is gone.
