Ans. The old man’s name was Tammanna. He was an honest and hardworking man. He used to take care of the owner’s garden very well. He solved all the problems of the workers and all the workers would work hard with him. In this way, all the workers teamwork reaped good fruits for the owner and this made him lazy.

Ans. The supporters of Tammanna gave him multiple ways to help in getting back his land. They suggested that he visit the court. They also advised him to take the help of the police. If these options were not liked by him, they also advised him to attack Basavaih with the help of some ruffians.

1.) The rivalry between Tammanna and Basaviah keeps moving from the visible domain to the invisible. Comment.
Ans. In the story, Tammanna and Basaviah are two rivals. Their rivalry has no bounds. If one did a thing, another would do the same or more things just to make each other jealous. If had 10 friends, another would call his 15 admirers. In this way, their rivalry got deeper with the time. But Tammanna wanted to anhiliate Basaviah., so he hit upon an idea. He started to compose and sing ballads that would make him famous. It showed the people how cruel Basaviah was. Physical property like gold, diamond, land could be competed with the same things, but these intellectual traits couldn’t be copied. That was something here which could not be seen.
2.) How does Tammanna adopt a counter strategy to challenge the material wealth of Basavaih?
Ans. Tammanna and Basaviah were rivals of each other. They did every possible thing to make each other jealous. But when Tammana realized that no amount of physical property would humiliate him, he hit upon an idea. He started composing and singing ballads that contained meanness and cruelty of Basaviah. Through his ballads, he told the people about how cruel Basaviah was. He knew that everything else could be bought by money, but knowledge and skill is something that cannot be copied or bought.

Ans. Tammanna wanted to take revenge against Basavaiah and so he sang ballads that contained cruelty done by Basaviah. Tammanna decided to die as he thought that his death would mean lost of meaning in the rivalry of both of them. Tammanna initially gains materialistic things and becomes happy in it, but later he realizes that only spiritually he can be happy. Through the character of Tammanna, one realizes that one doesn’t stop taking revenge till the end of his life, he keep the bitter feeling till the end. One should hold grudges for a long time.

Ans. It is a human nature to get bored. When Russia told America that it would not wage a war against it, it shocked America. Nobody would understand the agony and boredom of America. A nation can accept such kin of change, but humans cannot. When Basaviah passed away, Tammanna had no reason to live. His rivalry had no meaning. He became a non-entity and he avenged himself.

Ans. Change is the law of the nature and we humans have to go through certain changes in life. We need to accept changed situations. The narrator here is the man called Tammanna who narrates everything to the owner’s wife. But interestingly, he is the owner himself. Through this narrative technique, we come to know that humans are unpredictable and human nature keeps changing.
