Essay on Work from home: A boon or bane? for Class 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Work from home: A boon or bane? Essay : Work from home refers to a working situation in which an employee sets up their office in their homes and do the work assigned to them from the comfort of their homes without having to travel to the office. The WFH has become the norm ever since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the prevalence of lockdowns, most organisations accepted this mode of making the employees work. The WFH policy is tailored according to the needs of the organisations and the requirements of the employees. There are a few parameters that decide whether the WFH will be suitable or not. These are the type of industry, work profile, age and gender of employees and the type of household they belong to. It is highly controversial to decide whether working from home is a bane or a boon.
Discussion:
Owing to the advantages that working from home entails, it is preferred by many organisations. 73 per cent of companies in India have decided to accept the hybrid mode of working after the pandemic got over. This is because they were highly benefited by adopting the WFH model during the pandemic. For instance, Tata Steel led by Ratan Tata has opted for the Agile Working model. The main motto of every organisation is to remain productive and increase their productivity. This aim has been fulfilled by ‘work from home mode whereby the employee has by and large contributed to productivity. During the pandemic, for instance, Reliance Industries made most of the profit, amounting to 49,128 crores. The company has been able to achieve this by adopting the work-from-home mode during the pandemic. Productivity increases because employees work from their homes in a stress-free manner without having to fear of being contracted by the perilous coronavirus. Had they been travelling to the office they could not work in a stress-free manner in the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, as they were free from the distraction of their colleagues, they could focus on their work in a more vigilant way than they could. Employees in a WFH mode can work in flexible ways; they looked after the need of the families and they worked for the office too. In addition, they could also save the money that was needed for their daily lunch and commutation purposes. This made them more delighted and thus they could work in a responsible, yet funfilled way.
However, working from home has some disadvantages. It is noted that in the absence of team building and effective communication, spontaneity among colleagues is lost. Furthermore, the employees are not able to ingrain positive work culture values and the juniors also deprived themselves of the opportunity of learning from their seniors. Some employees even found it expensive to set up the workplace at their homes which consisted of the installation of Wi-Fi and buying printers, cartridges, desks and chairs.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that working from home is a boon, not a bane, due to the various advantages it has. However, as the pandemic got over, the hybrid working mode can be adopted by the organisation. This will help in increasing the productivity of the organisation and at the same time allow the employees to work in a flexible manner. By this, the employees will be allowed to have their work-life balance and this will act as stimuli in making them more productive in their work.
