Essay on Parenting in a competitive Indian society is a challenge for Class 12, Mains Exam (UPSC, PSC, SSC)
Parenting in a competitive Indian society is a challenge Essay : Parenting refers to the process of the upbringing of a child by inculcating in him, good moral values. The parenting style varies from one culture to the other and as India is a land of diversity, the cultural values that are instilled in the children, also differ. This creates competitiveness in the parenting style in Indian society. Under the influence of westernisation, the parenting style in India has also changed. Indian parents mostly rely on values-based parenting. Most Indian parents are working. 62.3 per cent of families have both parents working. Whereas, the remaining have got only one parent working. Thus the parenting style varies from one another. However, both families focus on inculcating good cultural values in the children such as touching the feet of elders to seek blessing instead of greeting them by saying ‘hi’ or a ‘hello’.
Discussion
Indian parenting style is different as it consists of three different parenting styles. These are the authoritarian style, permissive style and uninvolved style. All three types of parenting styles apply while making career, lifestyle, and academic choices. One of the most traditional types of parenting style is the authoritarian parenting style. Parents who follow this parents style want their wards to be highly disciplined. However, any decision or opinion taken by the parents is not taken into consideration by their parents. The parents set strict rules which their children are bound to follow. It is believed by the parents that by doing so, their children can grow up to be successful individuals. On the contrary, in households where both parents are working, mainly the pessimist parenting style is adopted. They allow their children to take decisions and if any guidance is necessary, they provide those to them. Furthermore, the parents do not interfere much in the decision-making of the children. In this parenting style, no kind of negative reinforcement is given to the children which is otherwise not the case with the authoritarian parenting style. In some situations, it is observed that some working parents hardly pay any attention to their children whether it is in their lifestyle or career-making decisions. This type of parenting style is referred to as the uninvolved parenting style. Children who experience uninvolved parenting styles might develop low self-esteem or sometimes they may turn out to be aggressive as they are deprived of parental care and affection.
Conclusion
While the authoritative parenting style may be regarded as the best as the children are always placed under strict guidance, at the same time, children do not get any scope or opportunity to express their feelings. This also might make the children feeble in taking their own decisions, when they grow up. Contrary to this, it is believed that children who are brought by a pessimist parenting style maybe outspoken or they can participate in reckless decision taking. In this context, Indian parents get confused as to what parenting decisions they shall follow. Moreover, they also get bemused when it comes to guiding their children regarding their lifestyle decision-making or career decision-making. And hence the parenting style becomes more challenging for them. Thus, it is advised to the parents to follow the autocratic parenting style in which they need not be too strict or too uninvolved.
