What If Summary
The poem is expressed by the poet through a child’s voice and showed his point of view. The narrator is young and many question, quarries appear to his mind which he shares. When the narrator go to bed for sleep at night he thoughts something’s dangerous and very bad thing may happens with his, so her mind is filled with full of doubts and scary thoughts. May be someone sang their ‘what if’ song near to his ear. The narrator is worried to thinking that may he loses his speaking ability, or they may closed the swimming pool. His mind always thought about ‘what if’ mean is something happen or its result comes wrong. Some time he thoughts if he gets beaten up, or if there was someone present who added poison in his cup. At that time it is also possible that he may get sick and die. Some useless thoughts always appear in his mind. May be green hair suddenly appear on his chest and he looks so ugly, and results come that nobody may likes him, if all of them neglect him. All these funny thoughts come in his minds. He also thoughts that if his height growing stop or is he hit by lightning. He is possessive about his body and health. So he depressed to thought about that may his head started to getting smaller, or his teeth would grow in wrong way.
But the other bad situations are that may wind destroy his kite and start a fight between them. He worried about his parents that may they get divorced and then separated with each other. This doubt stuck in his mind and thoughts that if he never learnt to dance.
Due to this, he starts thinking and worrying about what would happen with him, so he dislikes his imagination. Because his imagination is meaningless and worthless. Through this poem we know that he is free and alone so these fearful thoughts also occur in his mind only at night, and next morning everything looks fine and normal when she wake up.
