Henry Louis Vivian Derozio, born on 18th April 1809 in Entally, Kolkata, to Francis Derozio and Sophie Johnson, began his educational journey at ‘David Drummond’s Dhurramtallah Academy’. His intellectual pursuits led him to become a teacher of English Literature and History at Hindu College. Beyond the classroom, Derozio made significant contributions to journalism, serving as an assistant editor of ‘The India Gazette’ and holding editorial positions at prominent publications like ‘The Calcutta Gazette’, ‘The East Indian’, and ‘The Bengal Annual’. Among his literary achievements is the notable poem ‘To India, My Native Land’. Unfortunately, his promising life was tragically cut short, and he passed away on 26th December 1831. Despite his brief existence, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio’s legacy endures through his impactful contributions to literature and education in colonial India.
