Tropic movement

The tropic movement can be defined as the movement given by plants in response to any external factors such as light, gravity, touch, water or chemicals. The movement of plant in response to any stimulus called tropic movement. These movement can be positive or negative. Positive movement can be defined as when plant moves towards the direction of stimulus called positive movement. The negative movement is when plant moves away from the stimulus called negative movement. There are 5 types of tropic movement can be seen in plants.

1.) Phototropism : It is the movement in plants that means photo= light, tropism= movement. When plants bend or make movement in response to stimulus or more specifically light called as phototropism. This type of movement is generally due to hormone auxin. There are 2 types of phototropism can be seen.

A.) Positive phototropism : When plants move/ bend towards the direction of sunlight called as positive phototropism.

B.) Negative phototropism : When plants move/ bend away from the direction of sunlight called as positive phototropism.

For example : The plant sunflower grows towards the direction of sunlight.

2.) Gravitropism : It is common movement seen in plants, Gravi = gravity and tropism = movement. When plants response or moves in response to gravity called gravitropism. It is also called as geotropism.

A.) Positive gravitropism : When plants moves towards the gravity called as positive gravitropism. For example : Roots moves downward that is towards the gravity called as positive gravitropism.

B.) Negative gravitropism : When plants moves away from the gravity called as negative gravitropism. For example : Shoot or apex moves upward that is away from the gravity called as negative gravitropism.

3.) Thigmotropism : Thigmotropism can be defined as movement of plants in response to touch called Thigmotropism. The name itself suggest thigmo= touch; topism= movement. For example : The plant Mimosa pudicathat is touch me not plant. The leaves of this plant will itself closed when anyone touch the leaves. It is due to thigmotropism mechanism.

4.) Hydrotropism : This term can be defined as the movement of plant in response to water called as hydrotropism. Whereas hydro= water; tropism= movement. The plants bends towards the direction of water. The roots grow towards the direction of water.

5.) Chemotropism :- The term chemotropism refers to chemo= chemicals; tropism= movement. When plant moves in response to chemicals, such mechanism called as chemotropism. For example during fertilization process, formation of anther, pollen grain and their movement in response to chemicals such as sugar.
