The Proposal Extra Questions and Answers English First Flight Chapter 11
Summary
This play is a farce, written by a short story writer and dramatist Anton Chekov. It is a one-act play. A farce is a dramatic comic work whose main aim is to entertain the audience. The farce uses highly exaggerated, ridiculous, absurd, and improbable situations.
The play has three main characters. They include Stepan Stepanovich Chunukov, his twenty-five-year-old daughter Nataliya Stepanovna and his neighbor Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov. Chunukov and Lomov are both landowners. Lomov is a large and hearty landowner, but he is very suspicious. Both the landowners are wealthy, but they are very quarrelsome.
Lomov enters Chunukov’s house wearing a dress-jacket and white gloves. Chunukov greets him and asks him the reason for being so formally dressed up! He thinks that Lomov had come to ask for money. But, it was not the case. In a very hesitant manner, Lomov asks Nataliya’s hand for marriage. Chunukov is overly excited about hearing this.
Chunukov starts imagining that this was the best situation. If his daughter marries Lomov, his family will be relative to a wealthy family. Chunukov would have more promising prospects to expand his business. He readily agrees to Lomov’s proposal. He goes inside to fetch his daughter.
In the meantime, Lomov keeps on thinking that marrying Nataliya would be the best choice for him. She would be able to take care of her. He suffered from palpitations. Sometimes, he is too excited and sometimes troubled. He could not sleep properly and wander around the house at night. His thoughts are interrupted by Nataliya’s entry.
She greets him and sits down to talk to him. She asks him the reason for being so well dressed. He nervously starts conversing with her. They talk about the weather, their plantations, and many more things. Lomov carefully chooses his words to impress Nataliya.
He says that both their families had a cordial relationship from the past; among saying the other things, he also says that his Oxen Meadows touch her birch woods. To which Nataliya replied. She denied the Oxen Meadows to be Lomov’s. She noted that it was their family who was the owners of the meadow.
Both of them start arguing about that. Lomov is very sure that the meadows are their property. On the other hand, Nataliya vehemently denies it every single time. The casual talking now turned into a heated argument. Chunukov then enters the scene. Instead of normalizing the situation, he intensifies it.
They start bringing in their dead ancestors and abusing them. Lomov decided to leave because the argument made him uneasy, and he wasn’t feeling well.
After Lomov leaves, Chunukov states that he had come to pursue Nataliya for marriage. Nataliya is shocked and starts creating a scene. She is desperate and continually asking her father to bring back Lomov/. She did not know that he had come to ask her hand in marriage. Just then, Lomov enters the scene again.
Both of them again start talking politely to each other as nothing happened. Nataliya politely agrees that the Oxen Meadows were indeed Lomov’s. Lomov is now suddenly upset about his dog. His dog, named Guess, had gone lame. So he wanted a new dog.
He goes on sighing about his dog and says that he had paid 125 roubles for it. To this, Nataliya noted that the price was too much. But Lomov denied saying that it was cheap because it was a first-rate dog. Nataliya again said that her father had paid 85 roubles for Squeezer, her dog. She said that her dog was far better than Guess.
This again started an argument. Now, they began to fight about whose dog was better! Chunukov entered the scene also. He joined in the fight claiming Squeezer to be a better dog than Guess. Lomov had a weak heart. Amongst all this argument, he fainted.
Both the daughter and father created a scene in which he died! But after Lomov regained consciousness, Chunukov gave his daughter’s hand to him in haste. They kissed each other but continued to fight about the dogs. The play ends Chunukov trying to shout her daughter down by raising a glass of champagne.
The play focuses on the hollowness of the wealthy class of people. For the sake of business, they are ready to go to any extent. They even consider marriage a part of their business. “The Proposal,” in a light-hearted way, tries to mock the wealthy class and their various measures for benefiting themselves.
