Madam Rides the Bus Extra Questions and Answers English First Flight Chapter 9

Summary

This chapter talks about a child and her first experience of riding in a bus. Valliammai was an eight-year-old girl who was curious about everything. She used to stand in the front doorway of her house and watch people. It was indeed her favorite pastime. She had no friends to play with on the street. So, she spent most of the day looking at people and the commotion on the road.

She loved watching the adults and the children because every day she learned a new thing. She had many unusual experiences standing on the street and watching the people.

For her, the fascinating thing was the bus. The bus traveled between her village and the nearest town. The sight of the bus and the passengers were of utmost happiness for Valli.

She watched the bus every day, and wish crept inside her. She wanted to travel on the bus back and forth. Day by day, the wish grew stronger and became an overwhelming desire. Valli looked wistfully at the people who traveled by bus. If any of her friends went to the town and tried to tell her about the city’s different things, she would call them proud. Though none of the children knew the word’s actual meaning, they used it as a slang expression of disapproval.

For many days and months, Valli listened carefully to the conversations between neighbors and people who regularly used the bus. From them, she got to know the little details of the bus journey. She got to see the distance of the town from her village and the bus fare. The town was six miles away from her village, and the food was thirty paise one way, for Valli thirty paise was a considerable sum, unlike the well-dressed man. She also got to know that the trip took forty-five minutes to town.

She calculated and recalculated for many days. After reaching the town, she realized that if she stayed in her seat, she could return to the village on the same bus. So, she had to save sixty paise for her ride up and down. She also calculated the time. If she got up on the bus at 1 pm, she could quickly return home by about 2:45 pm.

One fine spring day, Valli hopped on the bus in the afternoon. She was an active and outspoken girl. The conductor teased her by stating her as ‘madam.’  There were only six to seven passengers on the bus. Valli sat down on her seat and gleamed at the bus. The bus was a new one, and its outside was painted in white with green stripes along the sides. There was a beautiful clock above the windshield, and the seats were soft and luxurious.

Valli took notice of everything and started looking outside the bus. Due to canvas blind, she could not see correctly. So, she stood up to get a better view. But then an older man asks her to sit down, thinking she might fall and hurt herself.

But she was annoyed by his attention and mildly rebuked him, saying that she was not a child and had given her bus fare as everyone else. The conduct again teased her, saying madam, to which she was annoyed. She told him that she was not a madam and asked him to give her a ticket.

After the bus stopped, some new passengers got in, and Valli jumped back on her seat. She saw an older woman come and sit beside her. Valli did not like the woman because she had put on ugly earrings and had a betel juice smell all over her.

But the woman inquired Valli if she was alone and advised her that she should not travel alone. She also asked her address, but Valli said that she could take care of herself. She then stared out of the window.

She had saved the money without buying her favorite treats for many days. She desperately wanted to play in the merry-go-round, but she sacrificed that for the bus ride. She sneaked from her house when her mother was asleep. She had done a lot to take a ride on the bus.

She saw the beautiful scenery, the roads, the buildings while traveling. She was super excited to witness it. She also saw a cow that was confused with the bus’s honking and was running right in front of the bus. She found that funny and laughed all along. She always saw the train and the railway tracks.

The bus finally reached the town. Everyone got down except her. She was a spectator to the massive crowd in the city. When the conductor asked her to get down, she denied it. She stated that she had only come for the bus rides. The conductor offered to buy her something to drink, but she vehemently denied it.

The bus began the return journey to the village with a few passengers. Valli again saw the same sights but was not bored. She enjoyed every little thing. But she was agitated when she was the cow drenched in blood. Some vehicle must have hit the poor animal, and it had died. Valli was no longer excited. The memory of the cow haunted her, and she had no enthusiasm left. She did not want to look out of the window and sat down on her seat.

The bus reached the village at 3:40 pm. She got up from her seat and greeted the conductor. When she entered the house, she saw her mother talking to her aunt. Valli joined the conversation with the ladies and smiled throughout. She was happy about having fulfilled her little dream.
