Summary
This poem is a conversation between a young man and a young woman. By the end of the poem, the poet concludes that only God loves and accepts us for our inner self. God is never lured by external appearance.
In the first stanza, the poet says that a young man will be in despair if the girl rejects him. She was beautiful and had honey-colored hair that made anyone fall for her. But, that is not true love. The young man will love the girl based on her external appearance and not her inner self.
In the second stanza, the girl says that she would dye her hair in different colors. This would make her less pretty. The girl is trying to say that outer beauty is anyway transient. It fades away with time. She says that after dying her hair, the man would fall for her inner beauty and not external appearance.
In the third stanza, the poet replies to the young woman’s thoughts. He says that he heard a religious man say that only God loves us for who we are. It is God who does not judge beauty based on outer appearance. Only God loves us for our true selves.
