Summary
This poem is written in the form of a ballad by Ogden Nash. It talks about a dragon that was considered a coward by Belinda and her pets. But, it was he who fought the pirate with courage and killed him.
The first stanza states that Belinda lived in a little white house with her pets. She had a black kitten, a grey mouse, a yellow dog, a red wagon, and a small pet dragon.
The cat was named Ink. The grey mouse was named Blink, and the yellow dog was called Mustard. The dragon was a coward, so everybody called him Custard.
Custard had big sharp teeth and spikes on top of him. The dragon also had scales underneath his body. His mouth emitted fire, and smoke rose out of his nose. The dragon also had sharp claws like daggers on his toes.
Belinda was brave and was compared to bears. Ink and Blink were so strong that they chased the lions down the stairs. Mustard was as bold as a tiger, but Custard was meek and cried for a safe cage.
Belinda tickled the dragon. The other pets called him Percival. All of them laughed at the dragon sitting in the red wagon.
Belinda laughed so hard that it shook the house. Blink giggled. Mustard and Ink y teased Custard asking his age as he only looked for a nice safe cage.
Suddenly Belinda’s house was attacked by the pirates. He had pistols in both his hands and looked fearsome. He had a dagger in his teeth and had a black beard. He had a leg of wood and wanted to attack them.
In such a situation, everybody was afraid. Belinda cried for help, and her pets except the dragon hid. The pirate saw the dragon, drank, and fired two shots at him. But, it did not hit Custard. Custard, on the other hand, gobbled him up.
Belinda embraced the dragon. Mustard licked him. Ink and Blink ran in circles in excitement around the dragon. No one mourned the pirate’s death.
Suddenly, everyone came up with their excuses. Mustard said that he could have hit the dragon if he hadn’t been shocked. Ink and Blink noted that they could have been three times braver than the dragon. Custard agreed and stated that everybody was indeed braver than him.
