The ‘Bear story’ is a beautiful story by Axel Munthe. The story is about a bear & his mistress. The bear seemed to be very faithful & loved his mistress.
The 1st Para:
The 1st Para of the story describes how the bear was found by the mistress. Once there lived a lady in an old manor house who had once found a bear in the forest half dead out of hunger. It was very small & helpless. The lady brought him & made him, her pet. It was several years ago, & now he is a grown one. It was big, & strong but was very amiable who never thought of harming anyone. He would sit outside his kennel & gaze at the settle in the field. The children used to ride his back. The three dogs loved to play with him would pull his early stump his tail but he never mind. He never tasted meat & ate whatever was given to him. Porridge, bread, fruits, cabbage etc. In the autumn season he would stare at the apple trees as he loved fruits. When he was young he would climb trees & have a handful of apples. Now he knew that it was against the law so he would only stare at them. The beehives also bothered him a lot. Once he was chained with a bleeding nose. Otherwise he was only chained during the night.
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th, Para
The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, & 5th, Para “He was also put the ……………towards the gate for you to come back” describe his love for the lady. He was also put on chains on Sundays when the mistress went to meet her married sister who left on the other side of the forest it was no good for him to wander in the jungle so she would tie him up & promise him an apple for the good behavior & pat his head. One fine Sunday she had chained him up & was already late & rushed to the forest. She suddenly heard a cracking sound of dried leaves. As she looked back she was surprised to see him follow her. She was annoyed but in her severest voice told him to go back but he did not agree & kept sniffing. She was already very late & got really angry & hit with her umbrella on his nose. He then opened his mouth & sniffed & then went back slowly. The lady returned in the evening & was very angry. The bear was sitting in his own place sad. She again went up to him & began to scold him more severely & said she would even chain him for two more days. The old cook loved the bear very much & rushed from the kitchen, & mentioned that he was sitting like an angel the whole day. He was being very good all the time.
