Chandni Summary
The story “Chandni” is a very beautiful piece by Zakir Husain. The story is about a old man & a beautiful goat named Chandni.
The 1st 4 Para’s:
The 1st 4 Para’s of the story “Once upon a time ……. Laughed with joy” mention about the old man & his love for pets. There was a old man named Abbu Khan. He lived all alone only with his few goats. He called them with funny names & loved them very much. He talked to them as if he was talking to his own children. At night he would bring them back to his hut & put a string around their neck. But every night one of the goats would pull out of the string & would disappear in the hill. They loved their freedom & hated staying tied up. They would run away & were killed up by a wolf. Whenever the goats would disappear Abbu Khan would be disheartened. He thought that even the juiciest grass & the love would not stop them to run & away in the forest. He wondered that was it the love for the freedom of the goats that they even left behind all the comfort & love & ran for their death. One day when all his goats had left him he was very sad & thought he would never have any pets. However he was terribly lonely & soon bought a young white beautiful goat which was very young. He was very happy that he would not go to the hills.
The 5th to 9th Para:
The 5th to 9th Para “The new goat was very …………. Fight the wolf” describes the love for the new goat. The new goat was small & was very pretty. She had a pair of red gloomy eyes. The goat was very friendly & would listen to Abbu’s tales of the old goats. Abbu named the goat Chandni which meant moonlight several years passed & Chandni was still there. He thought Chandni would never leave him but he was mistaken. She would glare at the sunlight at the hill tops & thought how beautiful they looked. The freeze felt so refreshing she ran across the hills but had to stop with a jerk because of the rope that wouldn’t let her go further. She stopped eating & became thin. She would stare the whole day at the hills Abbu Khan could not understand Chandni’s anguish. Chandni at last spoke to Abbu Khan franky that she wanted to go to the hills. Abbu Khan was very bad. Abbu Khan asked her the reason why she wanted to run away to the hills. He even promised to bring tastier food & a longer rope. Abbu Khan made her understand that their was a wolf which would eat her up. Chandni ensured that she would fight bravely with the hours she had.
The 10th to 14th Para:
The 10th to 14th Para “Fight the wolf ……… she felt scared” describe how Chandni eloped from the hut & felt free Abbu Khan warned her again & again & narrated her the story of the other goats who were dead. Abbu Khan got very annoyed & put her in a small but & shut the door. But he forgot to close the window & the eloped from the window. She reached the hills & felt free. It was like she met her parents after long time. She played in the hills & felt as the happiest kid. She played for hours that day, met other goats who asked her to join them, but she refused. As she wanted to enjoy her freedom. The sun disappeared behind the hills & soon there was darkness all around. The wind stopped blowing & there was a strange sound coming from the bushes. Chandni suddenly felt sacred.
The 15th to 19th Para:
The 15th to 19th Para of the story “Should she go back ………… Chandni is the winner” describe the bravery with which Chandni fought. She once thought of going back home but then said to herself that dying in an open field is much more better than living in an small hut. The wolf came of the bush & kept staring at Chandni. The wolf & the goat sized up each other. The wolf was big & ferocious whereas the goat was healthy big & small. Chandni stood in courage as a brave soldier. The fight went through out the whole night. The moon turned pale & the stars disappeared one by one. A faint light appeared in the east. The first light fell on Chandni who was lying on the grass completely soaked in blood. The wolf looked tired & sleepy. There was an assembly of birds debating on the result of the fight. One of them asked who was the winner most of them answered the wolf. But one of the wiser birds replied with confidence, Chandni is the winner.
