ICSE Class 10 Chemistry Case Study based questions – Study of Compounds B. Ammonia

On this page we have given ICSE Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 9 Case Study based questions – Study of Compounds B. Ammonia. From 2024 Board exam, ICSE will focus on Technical Based, Analytical Based and Critical Questions in Chemistry Exam. So we Net Ex, has started giving Case Study based questions which is also known as Paragraph Based Questions.

Que No. 1 –

Manufacture of ammonia by Haber’s process

1.) Give favorable conditions for manufacturing ammonia by Haber’s process.

2.) Name the promoters which are used with finely divided iron (catalyst).

3.) Give the balance chemical equation for the formation of ammonia.

Que No. 2 –

Ammonia is dissolved in water to form its aqueous solution (ammonium hydroxide).

NH3 + H2O -> NH4OH

Ammonium hydroxide reacts with acids to form salt and water.Ammonium hydroxide reacts with soluble salts of metals to give insoluble precipitates of their respective metallic hydroxides.

1.) Complete the following reactions:

1) FeSO4 + 2NH4OH →

2) FeCl3 + 3NH4OH →

2.) When copper sulphate is react with Ammonium hydroxide gives which colour of precipitate ?

3.) Complete the table

Reagent                         products colour of ppt      solubility
1 FeSO4 + 2NH4OH →
2 FeCl3 + 3NH4OH →
3 CuSO4 + 2NH4OH →

Que No. 3 –

The diagram above shows the set up for the laboratory preparation of a pungent alkaline gas.

1.) Name the gas collected in the jar.

2.) Give a balanced equation for the above preparation.

3.) State how the above gas is collected

4.) Name the drying agent used.

Answers

Que No. 1 Answers-

1.) The favorable conditions for manufacturing ammonia by Haber’s process are:

Temperature: Optimum temperature is 450-500

Pressure: Above 200 atm.

Catalyst: Finely divided iron.

Promoter :Traces of molybdenum or Al2O3.

Rate of conversion: About 15% of the reacting gases get converted to ammonia.

2.) A promoter molybdenum or Al2O3 is used increase the efficiency of the catalyst.

3.) The balance chemical reactions for the formation of ammonia us :

N2 + 3H2 → 2NH3 + heat

Que No. 2 Answers-

1) 1.) FeSO4 + 2NH4OH → (NH4)2SO4 + Fe(OH)2

2) FeCl3 + 3NH4OH → 3NH4Cl + Fe(OH)3

2.) When copper sulphate is react with Ammonium hydroxide gives pale blue colour of precipitate and it is soluble in excess of ammonium hydroxide.

3)

Reagent                         products colour of ppt      solubility
1 FeSO4 + 2NH4OH → (NH4)2SO4 + Fe(OH)2 Dirty green Insoluble
2 FeCl3 + 3NH4OH → 3NH4Cl + Fe(OH)3 Reddish brown Insoluble
3 CuSO4 + 2NH4OH →(NH4) 2SO4 + Cu(OH) 2 pale blue soluble

Que No. 3 Answers-

1.) Ammonia is the gas collected in the jar.

2.) 2NH4Cl + Ca(OH)2 → CaCl2 + 2H2O + 2NH3

3.) Ammonia gas is collected in inverted gas jars by the downward displacement of air because it is:

(i) lighter than air.

(ii) highly soluble in water and therefore, it cannotbe collected over water.

4.) In order to get dry ammonia, the gas is passed through a drying tower containing lumps of quicklime (CaO).
