Based on your understanding of the poem complete the following by choosing the appropriate words/phrases given in brackets:
This poem is about the brotherhood of all men. The subject of the poem is the unity of human race, despite of the difference in colour , caste, creed , religion , country etc. All human beings are same. We walk on the same land and we will be buried under it. Each and everyone of us are related to the other . We all are born same and die in the same way. We may wear different uniforms like’ language,’ during wars the opposing side will also have the same breathing body like ours. We as human do they same labour with our hands and look at the world with the same eyes Waging war against others as they belong to a different country is like attacking our own selves. It is the dreams and aspirations we impair. We all share the same human earth We are similar to each other. So the poet concludes that we shouldn’t have wars as it is unnatural to fight against us.
Based on your understanding of the poem answer the following questions in a paragraph of about 100-150 words.
(1) What is the central theme of the poem ‘No men are foreign’?
Answer: In the learnt poem the poet wants to tell us that we all are equal i.e.we are human beings. Even though we belong to different countries, caste, color, creed, we all are going to die one day and meet the earth. We all have the same sun, water and air. From their (other countries) lines ofthe hands we get to know that their labor is not different from ours. They have the same eyes as ours. If we think deeply we come to know that there is so such difference in us and them, after all we have similar human traits and values. But there are some despotic people in the society who provokes the negativity in us and we tend to bear hatred against the men from other countries. When such thoughts are being sowed in the minds of the people, it is we who should stop and deject those thoughts. And we must remember that no matter what at the end of the day they too are human beings. They too have life of their own and they have freedom to live life happily.
(2) The poem ‘No men are foreign’ has a greater relevance in todays world. Elucidate.
Answer: The learnt poem ‘No men are foreign’ takes us through the deep thoughts of people. The poem has relevance in today’s world because we get to see how many countries are against each other. The hatred they bear for each other is turned into war and many people lose their lives. It takes toll on everyone’s life. The poet urges us not to fell prey to the people who provoke us against other countries’ men. We should betray our own thoughts and remember that they are human beings just like us. In today’s world we must remember that such acts of hatred will make us hate ourselves.
