Answer: The little children of Holland knew the dikes must be watched every moment and even a small hole could be dangerous.
(2) What was the work assigned to Peter’s father?
Answer: The work assigned to Peter was to tend the gates in the dikes, called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland’s canals into the great sea.
(3) Why did Peter’s mother call him?
Answer: Peter’s mother called him to give cakes to a blind man, his friend.
(4) How did Peter spend his time with his blind friend?
Answer: Peter spent his time with his blind friend by telling him about his walk along the dike and about the sun and the flowers and the ships far out at sea.

Answer: Holland is a country where much of the land lies below the sea level. The great walls called dikes is built to keep people safe. In the learnt story, a little boy named Peter was asked by his mother to go across the dike and give cake to his blind friend. When he left to return his home, he heard a sound of trickling water. He saw that there was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. But without being scared the brave boy thrust his finer in the hole and stopped water from flowing. His hands became numb and stiff and called someone to help him but there was no one to help him. To keep his people safe he spent his entire night crouching on a stone on the side of the dike. His head was bent, and his eyes were closed, but he was not asleep, for every now and then he rubbed the hand that was holding back the angry sea. Next morning a man who was going to work heard his groan and saw Peter clinging to the side of the great wall. He then spread the alarm and people came running with the shovels. Then the hole was mended. It was because of the little boy the lives of the people were saved, he didn’t think about himself and saved his people.
