(A) Answer the following questions in brief:
(1) What is rotation of Earth?
Ans: The earth completes its round along its axis in 24 hours in the direction west to east which is called the rotation of Earth.
(2) What causes the cycle of season?
Ans: The revolution of earth causes the cycle of season.
(3) Where do the vertical rays of the sun fall on June 21?
Ans: The vertical rays of the sun falls at the tropic of cause 23 1/2°N on June 21.
(4) On Sept 23rd, which season is experienced in the northern Hemisphere?
Ans: On 23rd September, the northern hemisphere experiences autumn season.
(5) On Sept 23rd, which season is experienced in the southern hemisphere?
Ans: The southern hemisphere faces an opposite season from northern hemisphere on 23rd September i.e. spring.
(B) Distinguish between the following:
(1) Rotation and Revolution

(1) The sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
Ans: Due to rotation of earth, there is occurrence of day and night and sun rises in the last and sets in the west.
(2) Days and nights are not always equal.
Ans: During winter the nights are longer then days and in summer days are longer then nights.
(3) On 21st June, the South Pole is in continuous darkness.
Ans: During this day, the North Pole is inclined towards the sun and south pole is away from sun which makes the south pole remain in continuous darkness.
(4) Why do the sun, the moon and the stars appear moving round the earth, from east to west?
Ans: The sun, moon and stars appear to be moving round the Earth from east to west because the earth moves from west to east.
(5) What is meant by leap year? Why it has a day more then a normal year?
Ans: The year that consist of 366days is called a leap year.
A day is added as extra after every 4 years because the Earth completes its cycle in 365 and 1/4 days i.e. 365 days and six hours and so we add one day (6 × 4 = 24 hours) to the calendar in the fourth year.
