Princes September Summary
Princes September is a story by Somerset Maugham. This is a Story about a princes and a bird and their beautiful bond. The story is about the princes who is daughter of king Siam and her name is September. The story begins with the princes weeping alone in her room , and when she was weeping she saw a little bird hop in the bird then began to sing. The beautiful song made the prince very happy and the princes stopped crying. The bird asked the princes to let him be her pet .The princes at once agreed to it and got exited. The bird sang her to sleep. Next Morning when the princes woke up, she found the bird next to her. Her face brightened by seeing the bird. September went through the palace and called all the other princess to meet the bird. The bird sang different sang for each princess.
The other princess got jealous of September. They told September that the bird flies in and out according to its wish so she should keep the bird in a cage as it may not return someday . The princess was worried after hearing this from other princess . The bird took a long time to return, she felt scared and thought that other princess were right. So when the little bird returned , September put the bird in cage saying that it was to keep the bird safe from the cats. The bird agreed to stay in cage but only if the princess lets he move out of the cage the next morning. The bird ate a good supper and began to sing. Suddenly the bird stopped singing and told the bird to sleep. Both went to sleep. Princess did not set the bird free. The bird stopped singing and stopped eating. The princess asked the bird why he did not sing like before. The bird replied by saying that he cannot sing inside the cage, if he is not set free he will die in the cage.
Princess even took the cage down to the take and stood the edge of the rice fields but all in vain. The bird did not sing. The bird said the things don`t seen save from within the cage . Next morning when the princes got up she got no answer from the bird . September open the cage and lifted the bird . As she weeeped her tears fell on the bird. The bird woke up and replied that he cannot sing if he is not free. So the princess set the bird free because she loved him enough to let the bird be happy on its own way.
The bird flew away with a princess to return. Princess kept her window open. The bird returned and it sang lovely song for her.
